Our Vision

The vision of the organization is that “no exoneree will stand alone. Innocence Maintained is committed  to ensuring that exonerees are given an opportunity to experience re-entry with as much support as possible. That includes taking care of a human being’s most basic needs from having a safe, comfortable roof over their head to food on the table and appropriate clothing. Innocence Maintained is focused on providing a tool kit of skills that will enable exonerees to function in today’s world with little trouble; to be able to secure a fresh start.

Our Mission

The mission of Innocence Maintained is to help exonerees make a smooth transition back to society by providing tools, resources, and skill-building that will enable them to return to the workforce, live independently and contribute to their community.

Who We Are

Innocence Maintained…
“Residence, Resources, & Renewal”

Aaron Salter has a vision that no exoneree will stand alone. He brought this thinking to the nonprofit he founded, Innocence Maintained, after being released from serving 15 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

Aaron’s Story
“We are Better, not Bitter”

Aaron Salter’s story is not unlike many youth who grew up in the city of Detroit to a single mom. Struggling to make ends meet while raising two boys on a social worker’s salary, Aaron was often left to his own devices. By the time he was 12 or 13 years old, he had been…

Aunt Bobbi’s House:
“Treating exonerees with humanity!”

Aunt Bobbi’s house is designed to be a residential assisted living facility for recent male exonerees. This safe haven is intended to foster independence by providing a temporary home where each resident will have responsibilities…

Our Values

As an organization, we have values that guide us and allow us to live our mission.

Unity and Family

Family, friends and community can be the catalyst for connection, as well as heal the alienation that comes with a long incarceration.

Independence and Safety

Every exoneree deserves to feel safe and to have the skills to live independently. This boosts self-confidence and leads to a productive life.

Freedom and Peace

Innocent people deserve their freedom and when that has been attained, they should have peace of mind.

Integrity and Humanity

Integrity is defined as consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. In ethics, integrity is regarded as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one’s actions. Our humanity depends on our commitment to our Integrity and how we treat each other.

Love and Community

By helping those in the community who have fallen through the cracks of our justice system, we provide a way for others to experience love and to feel a part of the community again. Love is the main ingredient in healing any community.

Compassion and Hope

Showing compassion toward others is critical to understanding and acceptance within a community; feeling compassion from others gives hope.

Knowledge and Stability

For the exoneree, experiencing justice is about regaining their place in the world and having the knowledge to protect their new-found freedom.

At Innocence Maintained, we know what it’s like to be on the wrong side of justice. Showing empathy shows exonerees that we care, we understand, and we are here.

Innocence Maintained helps exonerees
find purpose

Individuals experiencing re-entry desire a sense of purpose, connection to friends and family, and often a
re-connection to a faith community. We are here to help with guidance and resources necessary to
provide these connections.
